Entry Information -- For Artists:

 Plein Air Paint Out is an annual event sponsored by the​​
Community Council for the Arts and is an official event of the
BBQ Festival on the Neuse. PAPO is an opportunity for Plein
Air Paint Out artists to participate in a juried exhibition and

Juror for 2019:  This year's judge of Plein Air Paint Out
is Brenda Behr from Goldsboro, North Carolina. Brenda is a
member of Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist
Society, Portrait Society of America, and Signature Member of
Watercolor Society of North Carolina. Among her many
accomplishments, Brenda is the recipient of numerous awards
for both her oils and watercolors and  has been featured

Schedule of Events: 
► Wednesday, May 1, 9:00 a.m. — Artists register at Arts Center and paint— The Arts Center is located at 400 North Queen Street.  All panels will be stamped at this time. Each registrant will receive a welcome packet, which will include an area map. Artist registering for two (2) or more days will receive a free admission ticket ($35 value) to ’Que the Arts — An Evening of Music & Art, the Arts Council’s sponsored cocktail party, art show and sale. This event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at the home of Kristin & Johnathan Hughes located at 302 W. Atlantic Avenue. (Rain date is Thursday, May 2, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the same location.)

► Thursday, May 2, 9:00 a.m. — New arrivals register at Arts Center and have canvases/boards stamped; day of painting

► Friday, May 3, 9:00 a.m. — New arrivals register at Arts Center and have canvases/boards stamped; day of painting

► Saturday, May 4:    9:00 a.m. — New arrivals register at Arts Center and have canvases/boards stamped; day of painting
                                               4:00 p.m. — Artists submit work to the Arts Center by 4:00 p.m.  Up to four (4) event-stamped
                                                                          canvas paintings may be entered in judging. An artist’s reception and judge’s critic will
                                                                          begin at 4:00 p.m. Public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Artists may also enter
                                                                          additional plein air paintings for the “wet paint” sale on display at the Arts Center. A
                                                                          commission will be charged on all works sold.
Registration Fee: All participating artists must have their canvases stamped at the Arts Center. Registration fee is $40 per participant for four (4) days, or $15 per day.  Artists may paint any number of days.  Payment must be received with registration form for complete registration.  Artists registering two (2) or more days will receive one (1) free ticket to ’Que the Arts. Registration may be completed two ways:

  • Download and complete a copy of the registration form. Submit your completed form to the Arts Center. Form must include your payment information, or attached check or cash.


  • Complete the form below and select the applicable PayPal-link button to make your payment.

Instructions:  Up to four (4) works created during Plein Air Paint Out may be entered in the juried competition. Canvases will be stamped upon registration. Additional canvasses/boards may be stamped during the paint out. Artists should refrain from signing the works they wish to enter into the jurying process until after the judge’s remarks. Canvasses/boards not stamped cannot be entered into the jurying process. A commentary by the juror with awards presentation and reception will be held at the Arts Center, 400 N. Queen Street, Kinston, NC, Saturday, May 4, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. A concurrent “wet paint” sale will be hosted at this time. This event is free and open to all artists and the public. A commission will be charged on all sales. Any paintings not sold at the “wet paint” sale may be left at the Arts Center for display through June 30, 2019. Artwork may be framed if so desired by the artist.

                                 Note: Overnight lodging is limited but available at Mother Earth Motor Lodge at special event pricing.
                                 Mother Earth Motor Lodge is located at 501 North Herritage Street in Kinston, 252-520-2000. Use the
                                 code “Arts Center” for booking. A 24-hour cancellation notice is required. Mother Earth is a recently
                                 renovated retro motif motel located downtown and in walking distance to the Arts Center and all
                                 downtown eateries, bars, boutique shops, and galleries.

Honorable Mention:  Gift Package
Special Recognition Category Awards will receive a certificate and gift package. These categories include: Best Architectural, Best Garden Scene, Best River Scene, and Best People Scene
